Chairman, The Westmorland Family
Drive off the motorway and step into a Westmorland Family service station, and you may be in for a pleasant surprise. The service stations have no franchises, but instead have kitchens selling homemade food and farm-shops selling local produce from unique, small producers. “Finding the right producers and working with them to give our customers a taste of the surrounding landscape is fundamental”, says Sarah, who took over the family business in 2005.
Sarah’s parents started the business in 1972, and it now comprises several businesses including Tebay Services and Hotel in Cumbria and Gloucester Services on the M5. Together the businesses welcome over ten million customers per year. Sarah’s key role in the business is to keep its community led values central to everything the business does. She describes the opening of the Gloucester services in 2014 as her proudest achievement in business.
Of business, Sarah says ‘Be resilient and think long term. It’s a marathon not a sprint.’
