Angel investor, business adviser and charity chair, Rachel Hannan wears many professional hats. She looks for companies with both the ambition to scale and a strong purpose before opening her pockets. The proof is in her investments, among them Real World Group a market leader in helping organisations improve leadership and CBiS Education who use robotics to stimulate children’s interest in coding.
She decided to pursue angel investing after selling her stake in her recruitment business GatenbySanderson in 2010 and has never looked back. “The decision was not just to do more of the same, not just rush into trying to replicate what I’d done before. I sought out other entrepreneurs and businesses with great ideas and potential, but needed an injection of financial investment, advice or confidence to get to the next level.”
Always on the lookout for ambitious companies, she has a particular eye for helping others to reach their full potential. She is also Chair of Leeds Community Foundation, a charity that has distributed almost £40 million to deliver positive change in communities that need it most.
Asked what inspires her, she says, “All the entrepreneurs past, present and future who have the courage and determination to take the plunge and go on to successfully create new, sustainable businesses and the opportunities and jobs this provides.”
