Director of Digital Ventures, Curzon
Curzon launched in 1934; and has been on a mission ever since to challenge and improve upon the traditional cinema and film business models. Its Director, Philip Mordecai, has been a major driving force behind the company’s strategy. Its acclaim is unparalleled and via its Cinema, Distribution and Digital businesses they have stuffed the trophy cabinet along the way: it won Independent Distributor of the Year at the Screen Awards 2014, consecutive wins at the prestigious Academy Awards 6 years in row, as well as an impressive 17 BAFTAs, and the iconic BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award in 2017. Philip says his motivation is, “a personal desire – to build a cinema legacy in the modern digital world that benefits society.”
Curzon has 13 venues and 9 franchise locations in the UK with many more in their pipeline. Philip launched Curzon At Home, a premium on-demand film service that acts as the “virtual” Curzon cinema. The digital venue allows customers to watch a handpicked selection of films at home on the same day as they are released in cinemas, as well as Curzon12; the exclusive curated video service free for its cinema members.
Philip’s key piece of business advice ties in with the aim of Curzon: to disrupt the traditional way of doing things. “Always question the status quo to push yourself – both personally and in your role,” he says. “Making mistakes is fine, it’s how you deal with it that defines you.”
