The Women’s Organisation
However this was not your usual product or service, this was helping half the population of the world. Maggie is on a mission to ensure that UK enterprise is far from a man’s world.
In 1996, Maggie started The Women’s Organisation, and led it to become an award-winning social enterprise that it is the largest, dedicated, women’s business support charity and social business in the UK.
She is actively involved with female economic development policy, influencing on an international, national and regional basis, and is proud to “lead an organisation that has helped more than 50,000 women to progress into business, employment, further education and training”. A particular highlight includes the creation of the first International Centre for Women’s Enterprise Development – home to more than 140 businesses and a provider of consultancy services to clients across the world.
For Maggie, a vibrant economy is one that encourages the growth of women’s businesses. “They invest in their communities, create jobs and wealth, and drive innovation. Improvements in the number of female entrepreneurs is critical for UK plc and society in general,” she says.
“Greater awareness of the importance and nature of women’s entrepreneurship, and programmes addressing these efforts, have already contributed to progress but continued efforts are essential everywhere to ensure the economy can benefit from increased entrepreneurial activity.”
