Director of Finance, Poplar HARCA
“Solving problems and challenging the status quo,” responds Jon Spearing when asked what satisfies him most at work. Jon is director of finance at Poplar HARCA – the award-winning housing association in east London.
He has more than 10 years’ experience working in the housing sector and in his current role helps to oversee the management of 9,400 homes.
Poplar HARCA is a registered society and invests in its area, community and homes to achieve its vision: discovering, developing and implementing opportunities to help its community thrive. Working with statutory third sector partners, Poplar HARCA has leveraged significant investment into the area.
As well as refurbishing existing homes, Poplar HARCA has built new homes, transformed estates and re-shaped the neighbourhood to connect it literally and figuratively to the potential of its location.
Revealing his motivation for the role and the organisation, he says, “[It] is being in a space which can bring out innovative solutions to societal issues. At the forefront of everything should be improving people’s wellbeing.”
HARCA has faced financial challenges during the four year social housing rent reduction policy, however the organisation’s spirits remain as high as ever. “That has been my greatest achievement,” says Jon. “I feel like I played my part in adapting to new measures, continuing to help people despite some tricky external circumstances.”
