Founder, Earth Station Community Brewery
Jenn Merrick cracked open a new niche in the beer market when she founded Earth Station Community Brewery in 2017. She set up the company as a social enterprise from day one – with purpose prioritised over profit. “I committed the brewery to our community in Stratford, east London from day one. It was the best decision I have ever made.”
The brewery’s principal initiative is the Pipework Project, which creates educational programmes and employment opportunities for less privileged children and adults in the local community. The scheme’s success has led to the introduction of a new apprenticeship standard in the industry.
With experience working for other beer brands such as Beavertown and Dark Star, Jenn is able to lend her knowledge and experience at Earth Station to everything from brewing to staff training and the all-important social work.
She says there’s no excuse for London companies not to have inclusion at the heart of their work. “Businesses operating in London have to make the most of being in one of the world’s most diverse cities. With so many different human and cultural assets, we need to make sure everyone is getting the employment and education opportunities they deserve.”
