Janet Smith MBE
Artistic Director and Principal, Northern School of Contemporary Dance
Every year Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) opens its doors to dancers determined to take their place centre stage. Helping them do that is the school’s artistic director and principal, Janet Smith.
Since taking on the role of principal in 2012, Janet has led the school in its quest to produce the next generation of acclaimed dance artists. NSCD’s vision is to enable aspiring future dance artists and dance professionals, regardless of background, to shape the future of dance, and Janet has plentiful experience in achieving this.
Before joining the school, Janet was Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre for 14 years, producing and commissioning works for the company that put Scotland on the map as an international hotbed of contemporary dance. Throughout her career Janet has received acclaim for creating and commissioning high-quality works and been awarded for her contribution to the dance industry.
Under her leadership of Scottish Dance Theatre, the company was awarded with the National Critic’s Circle Award for Best Company Repertoire and was recognised for pioneering leadership in arts and disability.
Her choreography credits include the English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, The Playhouse Company in South Africa, Batsheva in Israel, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland.
