CEO, London Borough of Southwark Council
Managing a fast-changing central London borough and making sure no local resident is left behind is a challenge Eleanor Kelly has to rise to everyday. As CEO of Southwark Council, Eleanor has engaged the private and public sector to develop a borough recognised for its community spirit and economic opportunities.
Southwark ranked fifth in the country on the Grant Thornton Vibrant Economy index for ‘Prosperity’ and fourth on ‘Community trust and belonging’.
As well as driving the borough’s growth, Eleanor has maintained a commitment to ensuring all of Southwark’s residents get a slice of its success. She dedicates part of her role to improving the life chances of young people, with a priority being adequate housing for all. She was recently involved in the official response to the Grenfell Tower disaster.
“I’m motivated by working in partnership with others to improve the prospects and the prosperity of our communities,” says Eleanor. When asked what her main piece of advice would be to her younger self, she replies, “to feel the fear and do it anyway!”
