Managing Director, Wensleydale Creamery
Wensleydale Creamery is the only dairy producing traditional and authentic Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese located in Wensleydale, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, currently producing over 4,000 tonnes of cheese each year. Yet without the help of David Hartley who helped save the Wensleydale Creamery in 1992, countless future generations could have missed out on the chance to enjoy the Yorkshire favourite.
Sticking with traditional methods, time-honoured recipes, local milk and skilled artisans, the business has experienced impressive commercial success since the turnaround. Its wide range of cheese, yogurt and butter is also exported around the world and it is currently working with a number of distributors in the USA, Europe, Middle and Far East to drive export sales. It is a community-based business and a major provider of rural jobs, contributing £12 million to the local economy annually.
David’s commitment to keeping historic cheese-making alive in Wensleydale and his dedication to protecting Yorkshire Wensleydale’s heritage and provenance earned him the World Cheese Award for ‘Exceptional Contribution to Cheese’, as well as numerous other accolades.
