Managing Director, Union Industries
Formed in 1972, Union Industries is a manufacturer with a rich history. The company, which specialises in heavy-duty doors and curtains for industry, prides itself on the treatment of its staff. After Andrew Lane became Managing Director in early 2014, it became an employee-owned company. Since then, turnover has increased by 32.5% to £7.25 million in 2016-17.
Andrew’s passion for employee welfare has driven him to spearhead this transformation: “I measure my achievements by the scale of the achievement of others,” he says. “Thanks to our transition to Employee Ownership, I’ve seen people become more than they thought they could be, watched them grow both as a person and part of the company.”
As well as the clear increase in profit, Andrew also believes that his philosophy generates better customer service. They are often told, he claims, that their service is “the best” or “second to none.”
In terms of business, Andrew’s instructions are to be brave: “Don’t be afraid, don’t wait, just do it. If it goes wrong you can sort it out. If you don’t know how to do something, do it anyway, you’ll learn along the way.”
