Director, Business in the Community Scotland
Alan Thornburrow wants to harness the shared ambitions of businesses, government and civil society to create a more inclusive and sustainable nation.
He is the Scotland Director for Business in the Community (BITC), The Prince’s Responsible Business Network. For more than three decades BITC has led the way on responsible business, working with over 700 of the UK’s leading organisations. Alan delivers BITC’s strategy in Scotland, working across the public, private and third sectors to support inclusive economic growth and the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals.
“What is clear is that we need a new way forward,” says Alan, “with leaders who put purpose first and collaborate to solve the social and environment challenges of our time”.
For Alan a vibrant economy has to work for people and planet, “we have a golden opportunity to reorient our economy to deliver the vision of the SDGs; from tackling climate change to entrenched inequality, the time has never been more opportune”. “To do so will require courage, innovation and collaboration, this is the sort of vibrant economy we have to deliver for future generations”.
When asked for the best piece of advice he’s ever received, he replies, “to listen very carefully to your passions and instincts. Your inner voice knows more than you, so pay attention and follow it.”
